Electric blues sounds more like rock’n'roll than 99% of the garbage they play on the radio and call “rock.”
Excellent example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5LxagCd5…
Another from the same album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zrpqi2TN…
And here’s one with harp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-JsFOuy_…
And another that was actually the flip-side of a top-40 song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAgP3229j… (It came out around 1966, when I had only been playing harmonica for a year or less.
And one of my early inspirations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIfgwNJkC…
And DON’T … FORGET … TO BOOGIE … BOOGIE … BOOGIE (OW!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQOnpV2sE…
Technical Blues stuff:
Most blues follows a very predictable pattern called the 12 bar blues (also used in lots of Rock, etc) that uses a “I-IV-V” chord progression. For gory details, check ‘Blues’ on wikipedia. This makes it easy to improvise when blues players get together, without everyone needing to know all the songs. Once someone suggests a key to play in, everyone has a good idea of where the song is going to go, musically, encouraging comfortable jam sessions and the ability to let each instrument add creative flourish, or lay down a fat groove to anchor the music. This is one reason the blues feels so much from the heart – within the blues framework there is space for each musician to interpret the music differently on any given day with any given group. Try that in an Baroque Quartet or Celtic dance and the music can fall apart.
You has to be soul. If music isn’t oozing emotion, (in the case of the blues, saddness) then it’s garbage, in my opinion. Now, that doesn’t mean all music other than blues is garbage. Heavy metal oozes anger. Country oozes “unprotected sex with women who act like men.”
A line I used in my College Personal Statement is this:
“Playing the blues is like letting your thoughts and feelings flow through your fingers and letting your guitar say them when you can’t. It’s like the feeling of after a good cry”
The blues is about healing.
It is about good people making bad choices, or stuck in bad situations. Happens to us all sometimes.
Willie Dixon: “The blues is truth, if it isn’t the truth, then it isn’t the blues”
How else could you summon the devil than by simply turning up at a crossroads at midnight. The devil will tune your guitar for you and you will be the greatest guitarist of your time.
The devil will then claim your soul.
It started so much!
Rock and Roll, Jazz, even the trash that is listened to on the radio today would not be here without blues!
Jazz evolved from blues, Rock evolved from Jazz, etc.
etc.
etc.
to elaborate on Yellowbelly’s comment you may want to dig up the movie “Crossroads” w/ Scott Biao (yes, really). The artist in question here is most likely Robert Johnson.
Ok…Blues is essentially the basis of almost every genre of music out there.
You can’t sing the blues unless you’ve picked cotton and Q-tips don’t count
wow
60srad has it right
ya gotta boogie man
the blues is ALL about “the feel”
I can show it, I can’t explain it
It’s a style of music that was born in the USA.
Yo’ Mama ought to tell you about it …
