Just curious to know, all those film scores, and soundtracks that we hear these days from new Age Pianists and Film Scores. Can they be considered as Mainstream and commercial music?
And also what is the difference between the two? Mainstream and commercial Music?
If they are contemporary soundtracks then they’re by definition not classical music – just inspired or imitations of classical and therefore could be considered commercial.
I suppose one difference between commercial and mainstream is that you can be mainstream without having intended to be “commercial.” I imagine people didn’t consider bjork or radiohead to be commercial sounding but they still became mainstream.
Classical music is not defined by time, but is a genre. There are classical musicians composing today such as John Williams. As you can read in Wikipedia:
, will never become mainstream because they don’t have the financial backing to be heard by millions of people .. it takes money to do that.
“The term classical music is used colloquially to describe a variety of Western musical styles from the 9th century to the present.”
So, yes Classical music is being made today, and it is mainstream and commercial. The terms mainstream and commercial can be interchangeable, because it takes money (from a commercial enterprise) to become mainstream.
