I play many instruments and i can sing very well but i am afraid that this may disappoint my parents because they don’t support my descision. I want to just sing and teach music but i don’t want to hurt my parents. Should i just go and do what i want?

    You only live once,
music isn’t a job, it’s a passion it’s something you are born with! You won’t be a happy person if you don’t pursue your dreams. You’ve obviously put alot of time and effort into your passion, what a shame your parents don’t respect that! It’s not because they don’t want you to be happy, it’s probably just because they think it’s a hard game to get into. They just want what’s best for you.
I tried to do several other things, but the music was always in my soul, and nothing else can come close.
Live your life for you, no-one else, explain to your parents, that you’re not aspiring to be the next pop idol, you just want to do what makes you happy, and that them asking you to pursue another career, is just like saying, ‘be someone else’ you are what you are, make the effort to show them how much you want it!
What else are you going to be anyway…study something else of no interest to you, to be like 90% of the rest of the population, slugging your guts out in some office somewhere, having no life other than work, praying for the weekend to come, hating every minute of it, living to work rather than working to live??? thats no life is it? Do you parents really wish that on you??? cause lets face it, you’re never going to be good at something you just don’t enjoy, because you won’t put the effort in!
I’ve never had trouble getting work as a singer, and it’s taken me all over the world! You’ve got extra stings on your bow, so think where they can take you. someone said above that one day your parents won’t be here anymore, and that’s so true, will you look back on your life with regret then??
Sit down with mum and dad, and talk, tell them how you feel, and ask them what the problems are, and see if you can’t comprimise somewhere. I’m sure you don’t want to hurt them, but how much are they hurting you??
Best of luck hon, will be thinking of you!!!

Well if I was you I would do what I want and your parents have to know that that is what you want and if they don’t see that you are very good at it. Well beacuse my mom likes when she goes and see’s me sing in my high schools chior. She doesn’t care if I want to be this or if I want to be that. She just says that whatever makes me happy is the thing I want to do in live.

    Nope sorry
There are billions of people out their just like you who want to strike it rich with music. Only two or three actully do.
Now if you’re talking High-school choir director, than yes the teacher union does very much so overpay them, but good luck getting into the union!
Just remember: sucess isn’t always what you’re parents want or money…
“Sucess is loving what you do, and doing what you love” The choice is yours. Live your dream, not your parents.

Let me put it this way: when your parents are dead and gone and you’re looking back on your life are you going to be happy with the choices that you have made if you do not pursue your dreams?
This isn’t about what makes your parents happy – in the long run it is about finding a career that you love. If teaching music is what you want to do then go for it and never mind what anyone – even your parents – think of it.
I will tell you that music is a hard field. Teaching doesn’t support a grand lifestyle by any measure. But if you don’t have to have the finer things in life and are quite content to make a modest living then I think that you can have a highly successful career in music.
It all comes down to want you want and what makes you happy. Don’t worry about pleasing them – this is *your* life and you are the one that has to live with the decision you make.

If you go through formal trainings, i.e. (if voice is your main choice) go study at an university/conservatory as a voice major (or Music Education major with voice as your primary instrument), that would definitely increase your musical career opportunities.
I do think music CAN be a great career choice (as myself is a Piano Performance major); however, this path is very skill dependent; the better you are (especially with more credentials/degrees to woo the parents), the more students you will get. Not to mention, to get those who are be willing to pay more base on your expertise.
Also, many voice majors cross over onto stage production. They have great opportunities to perform in musical plays, and that opens up even more doors to your musical future.
Good luck, and remember, your life is in your hands, not anyone else’s. If you are afraid to disappoint them, then work extra hard to prove that you have the ability to succeed, and make them, as well as yourself, proud.

I left a career I loved for life in a band on the road that I also loved, and I discovered many things about myself and what I was and was not willing to do for that lifestyle. I eventually went back to my job because of my personal security issues (I like it when I can pay my bills) and found that I was happier doing local gigs in a house band. That way I had the best of both worlds. The desire for fame was never my drive, it was more about being who I was inside. I needed to make music. I still do.
But had I not tried life on the road, I would have always regretted it. Don’t kid yourself, now. Most fall by the wayside, it’s a tough business. Try to keep a clear head and develop a thick skin. It’s like anything you love, though, this business of music. It can do you wrong and it can do you right. I say follow your dreams as long as you dream them. It’s good to have a back up plan but music can alway be in the mix. If your folks want you in college, becoming a music teacher is still an honorable day job, and you can give private lessons. Don’t make it a choice between music or your parents.
    Good luck!

You just have to be creative in what you do. For example, you could teach private lessons, teach in schools, put together a group and play corporate parties or weddings, work in the business side of music, do freelance recording projects, etc. There are multiple avenues to pursue in music – many of which you can try at the same time.

it can be, but you have to take a bunch of risks. i guess more of it depends on what kind of musician you want to be. you could go broke trying to record a cd out of your own pocket, but you could start a project on your computer and podcast it. I guess it comes down to if you are any good or not. try it! if you want to teach, you can make pretty good money off kids who want to be rock stars. your parents shouldnt limit what you want to do. after all, it is YOUR choice, and YOUR happiness. Your parents will understand what you do. if they dont, then they arent good parents.
