I don’t have the software or the cable that is sold with the phone, but I have an SD micro card and a card reader. I can get music onto the phone and I can play it, but I was wondering how to have one of the songs from the card as my ring tone.

This isn’t an option. You can try http://www.myxer.com. You have to sign up but you can upload and song and make your own ringtone, download wallpaper and allready made ringtones. In account settings, you can choose what ringtone format your phone supports and you can download em like that. You have to give them your number so they can send you the link for your ringtone but they dont send any ads.
you cant i have the samsung sch-u740 the phone that flips both ways and vcast music cant be set as a ringtone. you can go to this website http://www.myxertones.com and you can upload any picture or song and songs u can select which section and for how long you want it to play and send it to your phone for free. try that i use it and the ringtones sound crisp and clean on my phone.
once the music is on your phone u can move it to the ringtones section with your computer
u cant take songs frm the sd card and put it as a ringtone
