So far, I have found Howlin' Wolf to be pretty consistently good stuff.
I'd also recommend John Lee Hooker.

check out The Black Keys... its a blues duo out of Akron. It is very guitar heavy but it keeps a bluesy feel. Everybody tells me that the guitar riffs are very Tony Iommi-esque.

Muddy Waters, BB King, Sam Lightnin´ Hopkins, The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Jimmie Vaughan era).
Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington.
Recently I heard Becky Barksfield and I want to recommend her too.

now if you really want to get into the blues you need to go back further...ROBERT JOHNSON, CHARLIE PATTON, and then you need to look onto all types of blues .....because there is a wide range of music out there in this genre

Start at the beginning. Robert Johnson, then go to something like Blind Lemon, T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Son House, hell Muddy Waters invented 'lectricity. You might as well try the white boys too. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn. Jimmie Lee Vaughn, Ry Cooder. There's even a girl or two out there worth listening to, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Batten. Don't let Jenny's hard rock credentials fool you, she's a heck of a good blues player.
