Just a recap on Byrde whose answer was quite good
To furthrer it, Take a song like “Take 5″ (Brubeck)
The song is written in 5/8 or 5/4 (It is in 5)
Begin the song by listening to it not actually playing but just listening. And snap on two and five
listen to the difference It swings nicer because the upbeat you are defining. Once I began doing that I knew more about how jazz is played the way that it is according to the drummer.
I think the term byrde is looking for is “the song will swing” or “It will be lighter”
I think you will know what i mean when you play this way. I’m no longer a drummer, but I think the drummers fundamental purpose is to keep the 2 and 4 (I recommend a high hat chip. or if you are using brushes or sticks slap the snare or high hat.) Give some indication that the song is being played with the upbeats notable which will keep the other musicians aware of where that upbeat is but not as pronounced as in rock
That becomes the drummers most fundamental purpose. Since I have been playing a bass I now see that whereas i did not as a drummer
When practicing listen to the song and snap along with it first and define where the upbeat is by doing that not playing it with the band on practice time (especially in compound time)
Also (You probably know this already) but just in case don’t have a heavy foot or play using the hands not the foot. If the foot is too much the drums get clouded and blurred

    From a guitar/bass player,
they emphasize the 2/4, more than the 1/3,
    they utilize the shuffle more,
they have more of a loose feel,
(not to be confused with sloppy)
More “feel in the groove” of the song.
It’s more of a feel thing, that is not that easy to explain
Drummers can probably explain it better

Hey, I’m in Jazz band this semester. I play Tenor Sax, but I’ve taken note of the drummers and how they paly rhythms different from modern rock, country, etc. In a Jazz/Blues feel a drummer would normally be playing along the lines of a ride cymbal or hi-hat tsss tst, ts tsss rhythm. Things that normally swing a little. On the other hand normal modern beats are bass drum on 1 while hi-hat is playing on 1,2,3,4 and snare on beat 3. Hope this makes since.
I’m more of a visual learner so I tried to put a picture into this answer.

Well I’m i’m in a blues and rock band, and blues drumming is usually quite a lot lighter than metal or rock drumming. A lot of the common beats are like 2/4 and are very shuffle type.
They also incorporate funk drumming, often using ghostnotes and so on.

  5. leftyjcw says:

Blues drum beats are based on 12/8 and 6/8 timings. 2/4 is not blues but country. More commonly called “cut time”. 4/4 and many variations are the basis for most rock, as we know it. But remember, there is always exceptions.
