I believe classical training is very important to understand scales, chord structure and of course all the different chord inversions. It is also vitally important however not to get to a stage where you are over-reliant on music. With jazz, you have to be able to use your ears to feel an improvisation once you have the structure embedded there.

Classical training is great for learning proper technique, reading ability, problem solving (from a technical viewpoint), sound production, balance, etc…
I would suggest getting some classical training, but working on jazz at the same time.
