It seems like the authors repeat themselves a lot–does this have didactic purpose? is it a narrative device?
When I had to read them in school, I read the Cliff or Monarch notes instead of actually reading them. I want to read them now for pleasure & get an insight into their place in literary history & how they have influenced our culture & society as a result. The lists I’ve found are random and subjective instead of in order of significance and value to our society. I’m looking for a comprehensive list of the best classical books ever written. Any suggestions where I could find a list like this?
I am going to buy some new books tonight, classical literature, not modern.
I’ve read a lot of the common ones so perhaps some less common ones. I’d like some poetry too.

I am writing a screen play and using names of classical characters to describe their attributes. I have a Helen, Dante, Brutus…but I need a male known for his loyalty. I would prefer something prior to 1900 if you could.
The Greeks wrote tragedies about human themes such as love, hate, war, and betrayal, and comedies, many of which were satires. How does classical literature compare with Enlightenment literature?
