Neoclassical shred is alot different than metal. Metal needs a heavier tone, and needs to sound more powerful, while shredders prefer lighter strings, weaker tones, and the like. It’s not the strings that you have to change, it’s your exercises, like you asked.
I have attached a link to my site where at the bottom I have included three BRUTAL exercises for your fingers. This will teach them to be more independant (allowing you to control them more), and make them alot stronger. As long as you play it slowly, your pinky will become as strong as the rest of your fingers.

Skip that idea.
Instead, use lighter strings, but not too light. Thick strings are more difficult to press down. Use a thick pick too. Learn to play light. You don’t need to jam your fingers down on the fretboard… just barely touch it to play the notes. Practice as much as you can. Look on the internet for scales and arpeggios, if you want to learn how to add melody instead of “random guess notes”. Also, practice slow, and slowly work your way up to speed. Don’t give up!
