I want to find some sad/dark classical piano ‘pieces’ (I dont know what to call them. I know ’songs’ is the wrong word) similar to Beethoven’s Midnight Sonata. Can anyone suggest anything?

All Funeral Marches – most famous would be Chopin’s (Sonata no2, 3rd movement) and Beethoven’s (Sonata op 26, 3rd movement), and many others (read on wikipedia)
Also, for “dark” subjects see Skrjabin – “Black Mass” (the 9th Sonata), Liszt – Sonata (apres une lecture de Dante), Mephisto Waltz. As for “sad”… the list is endless – since sorrow is so much more inspirational than joy…

The piece from the Julia Roberts movie I think they are referring to is Berlioz’s Fantastique Symphony. I suggest Mozart’s Reqieum and his Lacrimosa in it. Also Beethoven’s 9th Symphony 1st movement. Beethoven’s 7th Symphony 2nd movement. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue on the harpsichord. Beethoven’s funeral march- the 3rd Symphony 2nd movement. Brahms’ Hungaraian Dance. Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata and his Pathetique sonata. Moazrt’s Symphony # 25.

Well…. Personally, I would definitely recommend Chopin’s Ballade No.1 due to its dark-character and sad in nature. If you want classical piece with even darker character I would say it’s Chaconne from Bach Violin Partita No.2. Depending on which you like, would you prefer a peaceful but sad in nature (moonlight sonata) or depressing and dark pieces. taste differs a lot from person to person though…

Some of sad classical piano songs that i prefer are
Elliott Smith “Everything Means Nothing To Me”
Francoise Hardy “Il n’ya pas d’amour heureux”
Archers Of Loaf “Chumming The Ocean”
“Gollum’s Song” from LOTR: The Two Towers, performed by Emiliana Torrini
“Gortoz A Ran” from Black Hawk Down, Danez Prigent & Lisa Gerrard

Definately Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven 1st movement. its one of my personal favorites. first time i heard it i had to pull my car off an interstate because i had such a hard time focusing on the road at night with that on.

  6. Garrett says:

    B minor prelude of Chopin
    C minor Prelude of Chopin
C sharp minor prelude of Rachmaninoff
Second movement of funeral march fSONATAof Chopin

get the movie “Sleeping with the Enemy” right at the beginning Julia Roberts husband plays this really dark classical music but I can’t remember who it is.

    most by wagner (pronounced vagner)….
    debussy (daybu-c)
and a dirge by chopin….”going home”

Beethovens Sonata Pathetique is very sad and has some beautiful harmonics. Its quite easy to play, probably grade 3-4

  10. Anna P says:

Most of Chopin’s nocturnes are quite melancholic…
