Tommy Igoe’s Groove Essentials is a great book. It goes through a ton of styles (Rock, Jazz, Brazilian, Cuban, Ballads, etc.) and you get the CD which has play-alongs. The play-alongs are fun because you can either just play whats needed or you can play more complex things while playing to solid music. This book has improved my playing in many ways. Also, he explains what is important about each style and tips on how to play them.
The other great thing is when you search around online for Tommy Igoe actually playing with these tracks gives you more ideas to use when practicing alone. Get this book, goodluck.
