So my friends and I are writing a web show sitcom, and it’s scored entirely in jazz. our theme song is “Flight of the Foo Birds” (basie), and we need some other good upbeat “happy” tunes for the show. So if anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

A modern jazz big band is the DON ELLIS ORCHESTRA. Dealin’ with a lot of odd meters (9/4 — 11/6 — 35/16!! etc.) and sometimes playing with 3 drummers. The song PUSSY WHIGGLE STOMP is an uptempo 7/8, absolutely stunning.
Everyone knows the common ones….the Dorseys, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Sammy Kaye, or Kay Kyser. Try some of the lesser knowns…Bunny Berigan, Larry Clinton, Charlie Spivak, Henry Busse. These guy are all great, but for some reason, have been forgotten over time.
My new favorite big band is Bob Curnow’s big band. Try the CD with the subtitle “The music of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays.” Also like bubbie suggested, Glenn Miller has an amazing selection of songs.
