  1. Jon Robbins says:

    I I I I
    IV IV I I
    V IV I I
So, for example, if you’re in the key of E, you would play four bars of E, two bars of A, two bars of E, one bar of B, one bar of A, and two bars of E.
It’s used as a good basis for jamming. You can get any group of musicians together, with no rehearsal, say “12 bar blues in F” and they’ll make music.

12-Bar Blues is a standard pattern not only for the Blues, but for Rock and Roll as well. Many of the classics were written in 12-bar blues by artists such as the Beatles, Chuck Berry, and Eric Clapton. Think of each bar as a four count. That’s one and two and three and four and. Repeat for the next bar.
Typically, three chords are used in the 1-4-5 pattern such as E-A-B, C-F-G, and G-C-D. Once you pick the key, for example Key of C (a good one on the piano), you know all the chords for the song. Next is the pattern. Typically the 12 bars go as follows:
    C chord for 4 bars,
    F chord for 2 bars,
    C chord for 2 bars,
    G chord for 1 bar,
    F chord for 1 bar,
    C chord for 1 bar,
    G chord for 1 bar.
    That’s 12-Bar Blues.
And you can be a little creative by adding 7ths
    C chord for 3 bars, C C7 chord for 1 bar,
F chord for 1 bar, F7 chord for 1 bar,
C chord for 1 bar, C7 chord for 1 bar,
    G7 chord for 1 bar,
    F7 chord for 1 bar,
    C chord for 1 bar,
    G7 chord for 1 bar.
Listen to the music. Remember the pattern. Get the beat. Invite some friends to jam along.
