Personally I think you should write your own. I find it far more rewarding to yourself and attractive to the listener. If they hear something they know already they may stop and listen but won’t find much enjoyment. If they hear something original and like it they will be more impressed. Now I know this is a bit riskier as people may not like the music. But as a fellow musician (singer, pianist and aspiring guitarist and violinist) I’m pretty sure you’d prefer to take that risk ;)

Personally, I disagree with the previous poster. There are a lot of people who can sing and play guitar well enough to perform entertaining cover versions of other peoples’ songs — but writing good original songs that people will want to hear is a much rarer talent, IMO.
In my experience, the majority of aspiring songwriters aren’t very good. They have nothing especially original to say, their melodies are completely forgettable, and there’s little about their original songs that makes me want to hear their songs more than once.
If you want to busk on the street for money, your best bet IMO is to play songs that passersby will recognize, that will grab their ear and get them to stop and listen (and drop some money in your case). If you can pick and choose from the best songs written by the best songwriters in rock, folk, blues, and country, why wouldn’t you?
