Obviously Sonny Rollins is amazing, but he has definitely passed his prime. Don’t get me wrong, I am a HUGE Sonny Rollins fan. He was the best in his day, but there are modern saxophonists who have probably surpassed him in certain ways. Sonny Rollins, however, is a legend and could definitely be considered the greatest living player, when you look at his history.
Chris Potter is a master of the jazz language and can definitely be seen as one of the greatest alive right now.
Kenny Garrett is also incredible and sits right up there with the best in history.
To the person who answered above me, Michael Brecker was definitely one of the best ever, but he died last year (RIP Michael!).
Sonny Rollins is still winning the Downbeat poll, and is generally acknowledged to be the greatest living.
Sonny Rollins has probably earned the distinction.
For me, Michael Brecker would be next…
Dan Levinson
Living? The best living, would have to be Jeff Coffin!
I like kirk whalum.. Boney James.
Sonny Rollins.
Has been my favourite for the past 40 years.
