Perhaps it’s just me but there is something about when I listen to jazz at midnight/late at night I really get a kick from but I don’t know how to explain it. Anyone else experience that or is it just me?

Jazzman has a very good answer! Piano Jazzman I disagree with a bit, because it doesn’t have to be soothing. I think the reason Jazzman is on track is because there ARE fewer distractions at this time on night (fewer phone calls, fewer people awake, etc.) and you can focus on the music. Also, for some reason this is the only time of day you can hear jazz freely played on the radio! The stations play more “commercial” stuff earlier in the day. And that is why I love jazz! You can more easily focus in on the “offering” as Jazzman says, but it is not always “joy, peace and contentment”. You can more easily pick up on the implied emotional subtext of what the musicians are feeling or want you to feel. It is not “commercial” in that it is trying to sell you something. It is trying to give you or share something, and that can be “joy, peace and contentment”. But it can also be frustration, anger, pain, love, pure energy, etc. That’s why it’s jazz!

Jazz late at night captures the essence of what you are experiencing at that moment, its late, the room is full of solitude, you and your inner self can connect and the music is the vehicle that makes it all happen. There is nothing to interfere so therefore the music can speak to you and you are willing to listen and not only are you listening but you are also hearing the offering that it brings which is joy, peace and contentment. Don’t mean to get too deep, its just that I have experienced this also, when something touches your soul, it is something that you will never forget.

Its a matter of brain chemistry, state of mind.
At night the frontal lobe of the brain is less active. This puts our consciousness right in the moment, not thinking like it does during normal day.
When a great jazz musician plays, he is in the moment. When the listener listens, he needs to be in the moment to really hear it.
Most people don’t like jazz, and most people are not in the moment. No coincidence.
I think of the great jazz player as a knd of unrecognized traveling zen monk who bring people back to the moment through their music. Or not.

    Because you’re good and drunk.
Seriously as a jazz trumpeter for twenty years I would never play jazz while the sun is out. It just isn’t done.

it gives the feeling of both being mellow and being soothing-especially after a full days work schedule.
