It certainly can’t hurt. I am classically trained on guitar and my brother-in-law always gave me crap about not being a true guitarist if I didn’t know all styles. So I learned the blues. When I first started, I couldn’t play the hammer-ons and pull-offs without laughing my classical butt off! They were cornball beyond belief!!!! Or so I thought at the time. I learned to improvise solos by learning as many scales as I could. That is the ticket right there.
Yes, transcribing is a great way to learn, on any instrument. Focus on getting the phrasing, the swing, which will help you get the “feel” of it, which is completely different than classical. Once you’ve got the notes, that’s really where you’ll get the hang of it.
Get some Blues CD’s like:
“Let’s Jam” Blues
and “Band in The Pocket.”
These are professionally made backing tracks that will get you playing in in different keys and modes. Very helpful in working on improvisation.
i don’t play piano but that is how i learned to improv. blues on the guitar, so i say i will help.
