Focus on getting the phrasing, the swing, which will help you get the "feel" of it, which is completely different than classical. I am classically trained on guitar and my brother-in-law always gave me crap about not being a true guitarist if I didn't know all styles. So I learned the blues. When I first started, I couldn't play the hammer-ons and pull-offs without laughing my classical butt off! They were cornball beyond belief!!!! Or so I thought at the time. I learned to improvise solos by learning as many scales as I could. That is the ticket right there. It certainly can’t hurt.
